It's not every day that I get invited to photograph a big event like this and I was over the moon to be the official photographer for the United State of Women event at the Fox Theater.
There were opening remarks by Lynn Whitfield that got the audience excited to see the program and an amazing opening performance by the group Sista Strings, two wildly talented sisters from Milwaukee, who sang and played the violin and cello with such passion that it sent chills down my spine. I don't think there was a person in the room who wasn't touched by their performance. They got a well deserved standing ovation.
Then, there were talks about reproductive freedom by Kwajelyn Jackson and Allison Coffman followed by discussions on economic security by Mica Whitfield and Nikki Porcher, who founded Buy From a Black Woman, then a beautiful performance by Amy Ray. Then an astounding performance by Allison Russell who again brought the crowd on their feet for another standing ovation.
This was followed by a discussion on Climate Justice by Wan Smith the organizing director of the Georgia Conservation Voters Education Fund and Gayle Tillman. Poy Winichakul and Melanie Campbell then discussed voting rights for women.
This was all followed by a closing performance by Ruby Amanfu and ended with a cocktail hour where guests and performers could mingle, have a drink, and take photos.
All in all there were some absolutely amazing performances and some eye opening information that was said. It was a beautiful event held by Civic Nation and I'm sure all who attended were thoroughly entertained.
