What to Pack in Your Hospital Bag for a Med-Free Birth
Preparing for labor can be both exciting and nerve-wracking—especially when you're planning a natural, med-free birth. Whether you're a first-time mama or you've done this before, knowing what to pack can help you feel more in control and focused when the big moment comes. As a maternity and newborn photographer, I've had the honor of working with countless strong, radiant women who’ve chosen the med-free route, and I’ve learned a thing or two from their stories. Here’s a thoughtful guide to help you pack with confidence and intention.
👚 For You (Mama-to-Be)
Labor-Friendly Clothing
- Your own birthing gown or oversized t-shirt (if hospital gowns aren't your thing)
- Robe or kimono for coverage and comfort
- Warm, non-slip socks or slippers
Post-Birth Comfort
- Nursing bras or bralettes (2-3)
- High-waisted underwear (think C-section recovery style even if you’re not having one)
- Extra-absorbent pads or adult diapers (yep, they’re a postpartum must)
- Loose, comfy going-home outfit
🌿 Natural Labor Comfort Tools
Create your calm:
- Essential oils (lavender, peppermint, clary sage)
- Portable diffuser or roll-ons
- Massage oil or lotion
- Rebozo scarf or wrap for belly support
- Yoga mat or towel (if you plan to be on the floor)
- Birth affirmations or mantras
- Playlist + small speaker
- Heating pad or rice sock
- Snacks and drinks with electrolytes (check your hospital's policy first)
📱 Document + Connect
- Phone and charger (extra-long cord is a lifesaver!)
- Camera (or make space on your phone)
- Tripod if you want to capture parts of your labor
- Mini journal or notebook for birth thoughts or affirmations
🛏️ Toiletries You’ll Actually Use
- Toothbrush + toothpaste
- Hair ties + headband
- Face wipes
- Lip balm (your lips will get dry)
- Unscented lotion or face cream
- Light makeup if you'd like to freshen up for photos
- Shampoo, conditioner, body wash (travel size is fine)
🍼 For Baby
- Swaddle blanket
- Newborn onesie (or two)
- Soft hat and mittens
- Car seat (properly installed)
- Optional: pacifier, diaper cream, baby socks
❌ What Not to Pack (Seriously, Leave it!)
- Books (labor usually doesn’t leave room for a novel)
- Fancy going-home outfit (comfort > style)
- Diapers (your hospital will likely supply them)
- Multiple pairs of shoes (slippers are all you need)
Final Thoughts
You’ve got this, mama. Packing thoughtfully for your birth experience helps create the calm, empowered energy that a med-free labor thrives on. And when your little one arrives, all that preparation will have been so worth it.
If you're interested in capturing the beauty of your maternity or newborn journey, I’d love to help you tell that story. You can check out my maternity and newborn portfolio, or reach out if you have any questions. I'm here for you, every step of the way.
