If I could wish for anything in the world, it would be for dogs to live as long as people do. It is one of the hardest things in life to say goodbye to our pets when it is time for them to go.
When my friend Maggie contacted me to do this session, telling me about her sweet pup, how much they love her, and how she had a very aggressive cancer that she had just been diagnosed with, I immediately knew I would do everything to make it happen. I know what it's like to love a dog and to want to honor their lives. Maggie decided to do the session at their home, where Sprocket would feel most comfortable and where they could remember her. We chose 4pm to get that pretty evening light and the lighting turned out to be phenomenal for the session.
Sprocket was lively when I first met her. She actively circled me and my car, wondering who this lady with a camera was. She let me give her pets and was so happy and content to be in her yard with her mom and dad. She had the cutest demeanor. She would prance around and then when James or Maggie hugged her she would put on a serious face and just enjoy the hugs, kisses, and pets.
They had a gorgeous yard with lots of older trees out front with the leaves changing and a field of tall grass that just created this fairytale aura with the golden light. It seemed like the perfect place and we got some of the most heartfelt and loving photos of her there.
You could tell how much James clearly loved Sprocket and how they had been together since she was a young pup. I wanted to cry editing these. It was just so sweet how much Maggie and James loved her so very much.
My own dog is turning 15 in a few weeks and she has gotten so much worse just in the past few months with her dementia and blindness. I know one day soon I will have to say goodbye to her as well and it will break my heart into little pieces when I do.
Oh, how I wish dogs lived longer. It just isn't fair.
I hope sweet Sprocket's legacy lives on in the lives she touched and the people who absolutely adored her the most, James and Maggie.
