What is the best time to take newborn photos?
I always recommend to my clients that it is best to take newborn photos when the baby is under two weeks old. That is when they sleep the best. There are some exceptions with certain babies such as babies who have just had a circumcision, babies with tummy issues, babies who have had surgery of any kind, and other special instances. I work with parents when these issues arise and try to get them on the schedule as soon as I can.
I have done newborn-styled sessions for babies that were 10 weeks old but they tended to not want to sleep as easily and so the poses were more dangerous. When babies are moving around, they can fall off the props and they don't pose easily. It can get very difficult to find safe cute poses for older babies.
They also didn't like the warmth and were restless because they wanted to be up moving and flailing their arms around.
Please, if you haven't scheduled your session yet, please schedule it asap and tell your photographer how old your baby is.
It is best to schedule your newborn session in your second trimester to ensure you get an appointment with your photographer.
The time of day that I typically schedule newborn photos for is in the morning since the baby usually sleeps the best at that time.
I do offer sitter sessions for babies 5 months - 1 year old which are also cute but more easily adaptable to moving babies. I also offer cake smashes and milestone sessions for 1-year-olds and up.
