Can I just say how HAPPY I am when I get the cutest, smiliest, giggliest babies in my studio?!? Little Luxury's adorable, sweet self just made my day!
As a photographer, I love working with babies, especially sitters. Sitter sessions usually take place when the babies are between five to eight months old, and they have just learned to sit up on their own. Recently, I had the privilege of photographing a beautiful five-month-old baby girl named Luxury, who came in for her acting headshots.
I tend to keep the sitter session setups simple with very few props and simple backdrops as sitter sessions are meant to focus on the baby as the main subject.
I started the session by seeing how Luxury would respond to me. I always start sessions with older babies off by just taking a minute to understand their personality and trying to gauge what they will like and how to make them smile. The minute I smiled at her and said "Oh my goodness, could you get any CUTER?!?" She beamed up at me with sparkly eyes and a full-on smile. I knew from that minute she was going to be great!
The first prop I placed her on was the fuzzy, comfy white rug. I want to make babies as comfortable as I can during the session so I will typically start on the softest things I have and warm the studio a bit so they feel at home. I played peek-a-boo with her and she immediately lit up with adorable expressions that I was thrilled to capture. I worked quickly to take advantage of her good mood, knowing that babies can become fussy or tired easily and quickly.
As the session progressed, I tried different poses and angles to highlight her adorable features and show off her personality. I also gave Luxury toys to play with to capture her attention, get her to smile, and get her to play which resulted in capturing more candid moments and lots of smiles! I tried changing outfits, changing sets, trying different background colors, etc to get lots of variety in the looks.
I always work as quickly as I can with older babies so I can be sure to capture as much as I can before they tire out. Being a model is hard work! As much as they giggle and play, I know I have a time limit before their attention span runs out.
After a few outfit changes and prop changes, I wrapped up the session confident that I had captured some cute shots! Luxury's grandma, great-grandma, and uncle, who had been watching from behind the scenes, seemed thrilled with the results and they couldn't stop talking about how amazed they were about how well she did.
Sitter sessions are some of my favorite sessions because they allow me to capture the unique personalities of babies at that stage in their development. I love capturing these sessions whether it's for acting headshots, family photos, or just to celebrate a special moment in the baby's life. I do offer a few outfits for sitter sessions. The yellow frilly romper and the bear outfit are both studio supplied outfits and you're welcome to use them for your sitter session.
